E107 - Dec 9 2022

  • Supergut grift 🙂
  • Twitter Files Part 1-2
    • Same workers for NYT are on strike who were abusing Elon for his oppressive working conditions - against Sulzbergers - will NYT give them 3 months severance?
    • Matt Taibbi
      • Left leaning, worked at Rolling Stone, covered the financial crisis
    • Bari Weiss
      • Right leaning, worked at NYT
    • Drop 2
      • Dan Bongino - was shadow banned
      • Charlie Kirk was tagged as do not amplify
      • Jay Bhattacharya was placed on a trends blacklist - because he had a dissenting opinion on covid that has turned out to be true - a Stanford Professor
      • These decisions were taken inside Twitter - against conservative voices
      • This is an FTX level fraud - what was stolen was not customer funds, but people’s rights - not just Jay B’s speech, they were using Twitter as their personal ideological piggy bank
      • Jack, Gadde and Yoel denied they were doing shadowbanning - because they knew they were supposed to be custodians of customer trust
      • Even when they could not justify removing content based on their on ToS
        • Eg LibsofTikTok
      • Twitter also admitted LibsOfTiktok didn’t violate their ToS
    • Maybe not so different from private companies being able to do what they want and editorialize product they want
      • This is incredible gaslighting
      • They denied multiple times that they did anything like this - but they were doing it - so its a big deal now
    • Its a hard problem for all these companies - they made bad decisions faced with volume and scaling
    • Huge deal for Elon to take on twitter and make this public - software update he has announced show transparency
    • Problems
      • There was no transparency - they were not told what happened
      • These were not evenly enforced (especially when they were denying they did it) - Twitter is 96%+ left leaning
      • Shadow banning seems underhanded - block people and tell them why
      • If you want to intellectually test this, imagine rachel maddow or ezra klein were shadow banned covertly by right wing rogue moderator groups
    • Section 230 change needs to be law - this is why it was banned, etc
    • Twitter had an ex-FBI agent Jim Baker working for them who was curating the Twitter Files - he was intermediating the Twitter Files
      • Security state officials have power that they should not have - they should be non partisan and non political
      • Hunter Biden story shows FBI primed social networks to suppress story
  • China ends Zero Covid rules
    • Claim is that letter from Foxconn Terry Guo jolted CCP into action to relaxing rules
    • Instead its maybe Xi Jinping’s power play phases:
      • Phase 1 - consolidate power
      • Phase 2 - make it through November and become ruler for life with no competition
      • Phase 3 - now relax rules
    • Maybe there are limits to autocratic rule
    • Iran ends morality police policy
      • Demographics are evolving, most of population is 40s and younger.
    • China population will halve by 2100
    • Nigeria and India have lots of younger people
    • World needs more people - Western nations not as badly off as China but still not much better
  • Kevin O Leary defending FTX and SBF
    • Fraudulent conveyance - you have to return money even if you didn’t know you got it as fraud
    • But there’s a 90 day limit post bankruptcy - so there’s an incentive to delay a ruling so they don’t have to return their money
  • Krysten Sinema
    • Senator from Arizona, complicates Democratic control of Senate - was equally responsible with Joe Manchin for reduction in spending during BBB
    • Daring Dem leadership to run against her because then they will split the vote and Republican will win
    • If she doesn’t do this now - she will get primaried in 2 years and then if she switches to Independent it will be
  • Joe Manchin
    • Doesn’t have this problem because West Virginia is a +22 red state and Dems know they will lose the state when he retires - so they are lucky to have him until then

All In Podcast Episode 271 Recap and Notes May 1 2026

May 1 2026 Fun with names OpenAI revenue and growth issues Apparently missed user target, revenue targets (internal) Reported issues between Altman and Friar - prompted joint statement maybe They are almost trading at the price equal to their spending commitments On the other hand, GPT-5.5 is doing very well and it seems their compute commitments may be saving the day for the coding use case in Enterprise The key chokepoint is power - they don’t have enough to get tokens out Too much red tape 40% of data center jobs have been canceled recently - why won’t that negative trend continue? This will benefit the Hyperscalers - Oracle, Microsoft, Meta, Google, Amazon This could help Elon with xAI/SpaceX/Cursor 4 : 2 : 1 typical market share of a mature market Cool MIT paper shows we could reduce inference cost by 10x with no loss of accuracy This could increase usage Maybe Google has cut into OpenAI’s consumer market share Clearly these compan...

What's your favourite Iron Maiden song?

Part of the NWOBHM ( ignoramuses can go ahead and google that :P ), Iron Maiden have rocked for a long time, with many brilliant compositions (yes compositions, as intricately crafted as any symphony you philistines - the cadence of mcbrain's drums, the richness of dickinson's voice, steve harris's incomparable lyrics and I will stop before waxing lyrical about the guitars of Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers....man!). So what is your favourite Iron Maiden song? I ask because frankly I don't think I have one, and I doubt if its possible for me to single any one out. (get it -- "single"? I use it while referring to songs? mmmpff :D, k, never mind) (wrt the inaugural blog post which was in keeping with the spirit of this webpage, I thought I might as well clear the air regarding the only thing meaningful in the whole piece - the title )
