All In Podcast Episode 173 Recap and Notes April 5 2024

April 5 2024

  • New CEO Jon Haile
    • Strong background in incredible live experiences and events
    • Community matters, live content matters
    • Content creators are the new form of demand generation instead of ads
    • Live experiences are the way to go
    • New books: Bad Therapy; Jon Haidt’s new book also
    • 1M subscriber party will happen once they hit that milestone
  • FTX correction
    • Depositors aren’t really being made whole - their crypto dropped in price and they are getting it at the lower price, didn’t get the run up
    • Example: Solana was $16 at the time FTX went under - but Solana is now like ~$188
    • This is material to SBF sentencing - reporters were buying into the idea that depositors were being made whole - the media is carrying water for SBF clearly
    • Clearly the idea is to get SBF’s sentence commuted - his parents are big democratic donors
    • The collectors/trustee/etc are liquidating at high price BUT giving back the original depositors the crypto at low price
    • This proves that no one is being made whole
    • Basically people are getting dollar equivalent, not the crypto equivalent
    • The extra money will go to the shareholders
    • It was a custodial account of assets or was it a trading account?
    • Be careful what you are imbibing from the MSM
  • TMTG/DJT
    • Prices have dropped 30%
    • Trump is suing his co-founders
    • Guardian story is linking a loan TMTG got to some Russian entity
    • Clint Watts of Hamilton 68 fame which was exposed from the Twitter Files - is now being quoted by NY Times for there being a new Russia election interference scheme - he has got a job now at Microsoft
    • Be careful what you are imbibing from the MSM
    • Truth social insider trading happened with a couple of folks
  • Google reportedly acquiring HubSpot
    • Shares up 7%
    • HubSpot has done very well - $1B when they went public and now $32B+ - great organic growth
    • Friedberg - when he was at Google - they looked at buying CRM companies - Salesforce, Netsuite, etc
    • This was the next natural thing for their advertising business
    • Same like Shopify - they tried Google Checkout
    • This is a natural fit for their advertising business
    • Offensive/Defensive M&A?
    • Competitors can call regulators
    • Is this a sign that they are losing some ad revenue and so trying to grow through acquisition?
    • This would be biggest acquisition for them
    • What evidence is there that this acquisition is coming?
    • FTC will probably oppose it
    • This story might just be a rumor
    • This could be a data play
    • They could also be trying to use their AI tools on HubSpot data
    • Potential republican administration will have more traditional anti-trust play and not oppose bigness for the sake of it - no matter what they might think of Big Tech and censorship
  • AI job loss fears
    • Jon Stewart segment went viral

    • Airbnb and Box CEOs think they will get 30-50% more productivity

    • 3 charts show that new jobs will be created as we get more productivity and technological improvements

    • Media doesn’t want to talk about debt or war because that doesn’t reflect well on the current administration

    • So this is a head fake - talk about AI and scare people

    • Humanoid robots will drive a change

    • One reason to make humanoid robots is there’s a lot of human video data to train the robots on

    • Will this become mainstream in 5 years?

    • There might be more narrow robots instead of general purpose humanoid robots?

    • Gecko Robotics - interesting - class of applications that are related - their success indicates that there is far more money to be made in industrial applications instead of consumer applications

  • Blinken says Ukraine will be joining NATO
    • Press conference at NATO summit

    • Sweden also just joined in record time

    • Sweden, Finland applied to join in May 2022 - Finland joined in April 2023, Sweden in March 2024 (Turkey and Hungary held up their membership)

    • Politico report claims Ukraine disadvantaged in the war

    • Under Article 5, an attack on 1 is an attack on all - so US will be drawn into the war

    • Even Macron is calling for sending troops into the war

    • Seems US administration will try to admit Ukraine into NATO if they get re-elected

    • Ray Dalio talks about Big Cycle

      Screen Shot 2024-04-05 at 10.33.15 PM.png

    • There is a relationship between economic factors and wars

    • This was a clearly media-trained statement delivered at a press conference - so this was planned

    • Presidents who win second term are more likely to get us into war than not because they don’t care about voters

    • Is it up to countries to admit themselves to NATO or to NATO to admit those countries based on their own interest?

  • 1M subscriber party will be at the Wynn in Las Vegas

What's your favourite Iron Maiden song?

Part of the NWOBHM ( ignoramuses can go ahead and google that :P ), Iron Maiden have rocked for a long time, with many brilliant compositions (yes compositions, as intricately crafted as any symphony you philistines - the cadence of mcbrain's drums, the richness of dickinson's voice, steve harris's incomparable lyrics and I will stop before waxing lyrical about the guitars of Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers....man!). So what is your favourite Iron Maiden song? I ask because frankly I don't think I have one, and I doubt if its possible for me to single any one out. (get it -- "single"? I use it while referring to songs? mmmpff :D, k, never mind) (wrt the inaugural blog post which was in keeping with the spirit of this webpage, I thought I might as well clear the air regarding the only thing meaningful in the whole piece - the title )

December 20 2024 Jason misses Sacks Aaron Levie joins the Pod Subbing in for Sacks Sacks Thinks he’s a strong pick for AI, doesn’t know much about crypto AI regulations Earlier AI regulations were dumb - prescribing inane requirements - would have been bad to have each state with its own regulations Benefitting from competition - would have been bad to have them meet as a council to release improvements Crypto regulation possibilities Stable coins Tether and USDC making good businesses SpaceX/Starlink leveraging stable coins If everyone agrees on this - it could help global GDP a lot - credit card companies and the like charge ~3% of fees for transfers - this could go to 0 Stable coins is a good place to start because everyone agrees on this - BTC and other more speculative projects just invite too much animated conversation Even crypto folks can’t agree on how to regulate parts of this industry DOGE kills its first bill CR was very long - ~1500 pages With al...
