All In Interview - John Fetterman - Recap and Notes - March 18 2026

March 18 2026

(from NotebookLM)

  • Political Identity & "Moral Clarity"
    • Label shift: Fetterman ran as a "progressive" back in 2015/2016, but completely dropped the label around 2021/2022. Now he just calls himself a standard "Democrat".
    • Weird Polling Stat: He noted a poll showing his approval rating is roughly 50/50 with Democrats, but actually higher (in the 60s) with Republicans.
    • Core Philosophy: "Country over party" & "moral clarity". He refuses to just take the opposing view of the Republicans on every single issue, which he says the rest of his party is doing right now.
    • Who leads the Dem Party today? -> He literally said "TDS" (Trump Derangement Syndrome) is governing the Democratic party right now. If Trump likes something, Dems automatically hate it.
  • Foreign Policy (Israel & Iran)
    • Israel: He is "unapologetically" supportive of Israel.
      • Calls it a "just war" and completely rejects the idea that Israel is committing genocide.
      • Super critical of rising anti-semitism on college campuses and in the Democratic party. Won't take money from politicians who use anti-Israel litmus tests.
    • Iran: Claims to be the only Democrat in Congress celebrating the destruction of the Iranian regime and its proxies.
      • Key distinction: He says this is NOT nation-building (like Iraq/Afghanistan); it is disarmament. Compares it to disarming the Nazi regime before it grew.
      • Thinks NATO and European countries need to step up and help keep the straits open because they consume oil, making it their responsibility too.
  • Immigration, DHS, & The Border
    • Government Shutdowns = BAD. He was the only Democrat who refused to vote to shut down the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) over ICE reforms. Says shutting down the gov punishes everyday Americans and union members.
    • Border Crisis: Called the border situation "unsustainable". Noted that in 2023, 300,000 people were showing up at the border, which is the entire population size of Pittsburgh.
    • Accountability: He called for Mayorkas to resign, calling him a "disaster". He also proudly led the Democratic side of the Laken Riley bill.
    • Nuance on ICE/Migrants: Wants to secure the border and deport all criminals, but doesn't want to target otherwise lawful migrants.
      • Why? PA's top industry is agriculture, and they desperately need migrant labor. Also supports Dreamers (notes his wife was a Dreamer) and doesn't want to punish kids brought over at age 2.
  • Voting Rights & The "Save Act"
    • The Save Act: He doesn't support the current version of the Save Act because Republicans turned it into a "Christmas tree" by hanging a bunch of unrelated boutique issues on it.
    • Voter ID: BUT, he actually agrees with the core concept of Voter ID.
      • Points out that 83% of Americans and 71% of Democrats support showing ID to vote. Refuses to call Voter ID "Jim Crow" or voter suppression.
    • Mail-in Voting: Defends it as totally safe and honorable.
      • Proof: In PA in 2020, out of 67 counties, they only found about 6 or 7 cases of fraud, and they were mostly Republicans trying to vote for Trump using a dead relative's name.
  • Economy, Debt, & Ag
    • The Deficit ($40T debt): Acknowledges it's a huge concern. Says fixing things like Social Security requires "small adjustments" (actuarial changes) to extend it into the 2070s/80s, but it requires both parties to put down their guns and stop fighting.
    • Gov Fraud: Thinks everyone should be angry about government fraud and waste, even if it happens in blue states.
    • Agriculture: Farming is backbreaking work; farmers are hurting right now due to tariffs and labor shortages.
  • Future Outlook
    • Running for President in 2028? -> Deflected. Said he doesn't know what America wants yet, he's just focused on current issues (Iran, etc.) and voting his conscience.
    • Bottom line: He refuses to leave the Democratic party, saying he hasn't changed, parts of the party have changed. Plans to stay an independent voice, call balls and strikes, and put country over the demands of his base.

What's your favourite Iron Maiden song?

Part of the NWOBHM ( ignoramuses can go ahead and google that :P ), Iron Maiden have rocked for a long time, with many brilliant compositions (yes compositions, as intricately crafted as any symphony you philistines - the cadence of mcbrain's drums, the richness of dickinson's voice, steve harris's incomparable lyrics and I will stop before waxing lyrical about the guitars of Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers....man!). So what is your favourite Iron Maiden song? I ask because frankly I don't think I have one, and I doubt if its possible for me to single any one out. (get it -- "single"? I use it while referring to songs? mmmpff :D, k, never mind) (wrt the inaugural blog post which was in keeping with the spirit of this webpage, I thought I might as well clear the air regarding the only thing meaningful in the whole piece - the title )
